The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) has arrested and charged a Westmoreland woman who is accused of severely injuring her neighbour with a corrosive substance that left her with burns.

The accused, 22-year-old Shamara Williams, is a resident of the Hatfield district in Savanna-la-Mar. The woman she is accused of attacking, 34-year-old entrepreneur Altea Brown, also resides in the Hatfield district.

According to reports, Williams and Brown had a dispute before the incident occurred on September 23. On the day of the attack, Brown was standing near her car on the roadway at approximately 9:40 p.m. when she was reportedly approached by Williams.

The accused allegedly threw a dark coloured liquid from a bottle onto her, which hit her face, chest, and abdomen. In addition to burning her clothing, the substance caused severe burns on Brown’s body, and she had to be rushed to a hospital by residents.

Brown was then admitted in serious but stable condition at the Savanna-la-Mar Public General Hospital. Williams fled the scene, and unconfirmed reports later began surfacing online that the substance she used was acid.

After fleeing, Williams later turned herself in to the authorities on Monday, October 6, in the presence of her lawyer. She was subsequently charged with occasioning grievous actual bodily harm.
