Following his arrest earlier this year in the United States, Dancehall artiste Squash has pleaded guilty in exchange for one of the gun charges against him being dropped and the possibility of a reduced prison sentence.
After the postponement of his plea hearing earlier this week, Squash, born Andrae Whittaker, pleaded guilty in court this morning. The details of the plea agreement that the Big Breeze deejay accepted from U.S. federal prosecutors in August were released this afternoon.
According to Nationwide News, Squash has agreed not to contest several details associated with his arrest in February. Among these details he has accepted as factual is that on February 24, 2025, he was observed by U.S. law enforcement in Miami Beach, Florida, taking an object from an individual, which appeared to be a firearm.
Squash later entered a car that went on to commit multiple traffic violations. After the police pulled the vehicle over, officers saw the artiste frantically reaching for the glove compartment, where a loaded Glock 19 pistol was later found during a search of the car.
Squash has also agreed that he entered the U.S. illegally in January 2021 and knowingly possessed the firearm while being an illegal alien. As per the requirements of Squash’s plea deal, the deejay pleaded guilty to being an alien in possession of a firearm or ammunition.
The artiste’s other charge of being in possession of an automatic weapon was dropped. He is now required to pay US$100 at the time of his sentencing as a special assessment fee.
In accordance with Squash’s deal, federal prosecutors will ask the court to give him a reduced sentence, as he saved the court’s time and resources by pleading guilty. However, sentencing remains at the discretion of the court, and Squash cannot withdraw from the plea deal if the court disregards the prosecution’s recommendation.
According to the plea agreement, Squash has acknowledged that he is pleading guilty to a deportable offence that may trigger automatic removal from the U.S. The deejay has also agreed to forfeit any firearms and ammunition that may be in his possession, in addition to the previously seized pistol.
The plea agreement further states that the deal will be void if Squash lied to the government, commits any other offence, attempts to withdraw from the plea, or misrepresents any government official or entity. It is not yet clear when the deejay will be sentenced.
If the court chooses to impose the maximum sentence associated with the charge against Squash, he may spend 15 years in prison with three years of supervised release.
