A probe has been launched following the shooting of three people at a wake in Portmore, St. Catherine, on Monday night.
According to reports, the incident occurred in the community of Waterford, with the shooting beginning on a roof at a premises along Elmor Way and then continuing along Canewood Road. The victims have not yet been identified by name, but reports state that they are a 71-year-old woman, a 75-year-old man, and another male, 18 years of age.
It is believed that the teen was the target of last night’s shooting. Shortly after 8 p.m., he and another male were sitting on his roof when they were approached by armed men.
The gunmen opened fire, and the teen ran away, jumping from the roof. The teen, the elderly man, and the elderly woman were all shot during the shooting, while a third individual was injured during the commotion that followed.
All of the injured were rushed to a hospital for treatment, where they remain hospitalised. Following the shooting, Robert Miller, the member of parliament for St. Catherine South Eastern, visited the area to reassure residents that their safety is being prioritised.
“We want to ensure that peace reigns in this community. There is no place for it (crime and violence) in South East St Catherine. We just spoke to some of the residents to reassure them that we are doing everything in our power to ensure that (the) persons that are the perpetrators for this heinous crime are taken to (the) books… There is no place for criminals and heinous crime here in South East St. Catherine. There is no haven here for them,” Miller said.
He added that he has been informed of details surrounding the shooting and has spoken to the victims. However, Miller said that he does not wish to disclose any further information, as the investigation is ongoing.
