Glenmuir High School student Zaynah Shaw of Four Paths, Clarendon, was found on Tuesday after her family reported her missing on April 7. Police now suspect that a religious cult and her aunt orchestrated the teen’s kidnapping.
After Shaw went missing over a week ago from her home, her mother, Heidi-Ann Williams, insisted that her daughter did not run away. An investigation into Shaw’s disappearance was immediately launched by the National Strategic Anti-Gang Division (NSAD) of the Counter-Terrorism and Organized Crime Investigation Branch (CTOC) within the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).
Following a series of inquiries, the NSAD’s investigation led them to the home of the eighth grader’s aunt in Ewarton, St. Catherine. The 13-year-old was discovered at the house hidden under a bed.

In addition to Shaw, two other minors were also found at the house. Deputy Superintendent of Police Susan Bruce, the head of the NSAD, said they suspect that a religious cult was being operated at the location. Shaw’s aunt and two other adults who were at the premises were taken into police custody for questioning.
“This property was occupied by her aunt, who is believed to be the mastermind, and another female, as well as two minor children. Both females and another male, believed to be a pastor, are now being questioned,” Bruce said.
According to Deputy Superintendent Bruce, her division is also investigating individuals who tried to take advantage of Shaw’s mother after news of the missing teen became public.
“We are aware that some heartless individuals tried to take advantage of the child’s mother after this story became public. We are investigating these actions and are determined to bring those responsible to justice,” Bruce stated.
