The Haitian police have confirmed that two Jamaican male nationals drowned after a rowboat they were travelling on with drugs was intercepted by the authorities.
The names of the deceased men have not yet been shared with the public. Their deaths were confirmed by the counter-narcotic unit of the Haitian National Police (HNP). Per reports from the Jamaica Gleaner, the HNP said that “under the leadership of Acting Superintendent Jeir Pierre, the Port-de-Paix police and prosecutor’s office intercepted a rowboat heavily laden with drugs.”
According to reports, as a result of the interception of the rowboat, the two Jamaicans drowned, as well as a third man. The name and country of origin of the third deceased were not disclosed.
Reports further state that a Bahamian citizen who was with the men was arrested and remains in custody. Initial reports that have not been confirmed indicate that the men were shot at by unknown individuals, which ultimately caused their deaths.
During the interception of the boat, more than 90 kilos of cocaine were seized. The authorities believe that several other suspicious boats are still at large.
The Haitian authorities have described the operations as “a first in the history of the northwest.
