The police have arrested and charged a taxi driver, who allegedly sexually assaulted a female passenger after he took a detour.
The driver has not been identified by name, but reports state that the 23-year-old operated a Toyota motor car as a taxi on the Yallahs to Kingston route. The Yallahs police disclosed that the incident occurred on June 20 along the Albion main road in St. Thomas at approximately 7:30 p.m.
While travelling with the female passenger, the taxi driver stopped to pick up his alleged accomplice. According to reports, the driver went on to divert from the familiar route onto a road that was unfamiliar.
The male passenger then allegedly pulled out a firearm and pointed it at the female passenger. The driver and his accomplice allegedly proceeded to forcibly remove her clothing and raped her.
After sexually assaulting the woman, the men reportedly demanded her belongings, and she gave them her Apple iPhone, worth approximately $35,000. Following an investigation, the driver, who resides in the Heartease district of Yallahs, was later apprehended by the police.
An identification parade was conducted, during which he was positively identified. The taxi man was subsequently charged with abduction, possession of a prohibited weapon, rape, grievous sexual assault, robbery with aggravation, and aiding and abetting.
The driver’s court date is in the process of being finalised.
