One man was killed and another arrested after an alleged confrontation with members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) in Jacks River, Oracabessa, St. Mary.
According to reports, the incident occurred on Monday while a team of officers were conducting patrols along the Jack’s River main road. Reports state that officers signalled the rider of a motorcycle, which had a pillion rider onboard, to stop.
The rider obeyed the officer’s signal and stopped. However, when the officer began to approach the motorcycle, one of the men allegedly pulled out a gun.
Reports do not specify if the armed man was the driver or the pillion rider, but the assailant reportedly pointed his weapon at the officers who were forced to take evasive action. One of the men sustained gunshot wounds after the officers fired their service weapons.
“One of the men was found on the ground with what appeared to be gunshot wounds. He was transported to the Port Maria hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A firearm was recovered from the scene,” Superintendent Anthony Wallace, the head of the St Mary Police Division, shared with The Jamaica Observer.
The other occupant of the motorcycle was apprehended by the police. The shooting is currently being investigated by the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) as well as a team from Area 2 Major Investigations.
