Denyque Says Her Father Disowned Her After She Chose Music

During an interview on the Entertainment Report Podcast, Denyque discussed her journey in the music industry and how choosing a career in music led to a severe rift between her and her father.

Music was not exactly Denyque’s first love growing up, with the artiste having varied interests as a child. Among the careers that the Same Guy singer considered were chemical engineering, linguistics, architectural engineering, and law. Though her father wanted her to become an attorney, her passion for law, which was inspired by the movie A Time To Kill, was fleeting.

During her interview, Denyque said that after high school she wanted to study media communications at the University of the West Indies (UWI). Her father disapproved of this and convinced her to study hospitality and tourism management at the University of Technology.

According to Denyque, the decision broke her heart, but she did as her father desired. Despite the many changes in her life, singing and music were constants.

Denyque shared that she entered Rising Stars when she was 16 years old but was later disqualified after the second round. Despite getting disqualified early in the competition, her talent was noticed by a record label, which she began working with.

She later released her breakout hit Summer Love, which thrust the young artiste into the spotlight. However, while fans were falling in love with her fresh new sound, her father did not approve of her career in music.

Denyque said that her father not only cut her off after she went into the industry, but he also went as far as to disown her.

“He even told people I wasn’t his daughter… I was sad. I was disappointed. I was hurt. I felt like I didn’t have a safe space. I felt abandoned,” Denyque said.

The artiste went on to explain that the relationship between her and her father led her to the realisation that you can meet new families along your journey. According to Denyque, she and her father eventually worked through their issues and are in a better place.
