Teen Drowns Trying to Save Girl From Strong River Current in Portland

A family’s Easter celebration on Sunday was struck with tragedy when a 15-year-old boy died attempting to save the life of a girl stuck in a strong river current.

The deceased, Zedain Wilson, was a student of the Spanish Town Comprehensive High School in Greendale, Spanish Town, St Catherine. Wilson, who resided in St. Catherine, was on a family trip at the Swift River in Caenwood, Hope Bay, Portland, yesterday.

According to reports, during the afternoon, a girl, whose identity has not yet been released, began experiencing difficulties while in the Swift River. A member of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) shared with the Jamaica Observer that Wilson went onto the river to assist the girl.

“Wilson was at the river at a family function when a girl got into difficulties by the strong current in the river, and he jumped into the river and was pushing the girl to safety when he was taken away by the strong current,” the police said.

Men at the scene of the incident launched a search, and Wilson was later found and pulled from the river unresponsive. The teen was pronounced dead after he was transported to the Port Antonio Hospital.
