A 31-year-old woman from Trinidad and Tobago lost her life on Monday after the car she was travelling in plunged into the river near the Wag Water Bridge along the Agualta Vale main road in St. Mary.
The deceased has been identified as Shirnell Maxine Ettienne.
Reports indicate that at approximately 10:30 a.m., a Toyota Corolla Altis was travelling west along the Agualta Vale main road when the driver reportedly lost control while negotiating a left-hand bend near the bridge.
The vehicle crossed the roadway before plunging into the river below.
All three occupants managed to escape the submerged vehicle. However, while attempting to make her way to safety along the riverbank, Shirnell reportedly lost her footing and was swept away by the strong current.
Superintendent Anthony Wallace, commander of the St. Mary Police Division, said the woman’s body was later recovered from the river by a nearby resident. She was taken to Annotto Bay Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The other occupants of the vehicle were also transported to Annotto Bay Hospital, where they received treatment for injuries sustained in the crash.
The police are reminding drivers to obey the speed limit, remain alert behind the wheel, and drive responsibly to help prevent similar tragedies.
