One man dead after reported shootout with police in Portmore

A man lost his life following a reported confrontation with police in Dunbeholden, Portmore, on Thursday night.

The deceased was identified only by his alias ‘Chop Head’.

The incident unfolded around 9:00 p.m. when members of the St. Catherine South Quick Response Unit were carrying out patrols along Gilbert Avenue.

Police say their attention was drawn to a man who appeared to have a firearm tucked in his waistband.

The man was reportedly seen heading toward a nearby house, prompting officers to investigate.

On approaching the premises, the team noticed that the back door was open and observed two men inside. One of the occupants allegedly matched the description of the individual seen earlier.

According to investigators, the situation quickly turned dangerous when the suspect allegedly pulled a gun and fired at the police. Officers returned fire, while another man who was inside the house managed to escape during the commotion.

Police say the armed suspect then ran further into the building, leading officers deeper into the residence.

A second confrontation reportedly took place in the kitchen after the man allegedly pointed the weapon at the police again.

When the shooting ended, the suspect was found suffering from gunshot wounds.

He was taken to the Spanish Town Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.

A Beretta pistol was reportedly recovered at the scene with a magazine containing eight rounds of ammunition.

No injuries were reported among the police officers involved in the operation.

The police are on the hunt for the second individual who escaped the scene.
