The fatal police shooting of 26-year-old Amani Malcolm in Denham Town has sparked protests and renewed questions from residents after videos showing parts of the confrontation began circulating online.
Malcolm, also known by names including “Bling Dawg” and “Bamshot,” was shot at the intersection of North Street and Pink Lane in Denham Town, Kingston, on Friday night at around 11:00pm.
According to the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), a police team was on mobile patrol when officers encountered Malcolm. Police said an armed confrontation developed after Malcolm allegedly produced a firearm and pointed it at one of the officers.
The JCF said a physical struggle then developed between Malcolm and an officer, during which shots were fired. Malcolm was injured and taken to Kingston Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police reported that a Glock 26 pistol loaded with five 9mm rounds was recovered at the scene. A civilian was also shot and injured during the incident.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation.

Malcolm Was Reportedly At A Party

Residents said Malcolm was pulled away from the gathering by the officers before the confrontation that ended with him being shot.

The officer reportedly fired again, managed to break free, and took cover. Police said Malcolm remained on the ground with the rifle before another officer fired a single round, causing the rifle to fall from his grasp.
The Glock 26 pistol and the police rifle were subsequently recovered, according to the police account.
