Three members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force were injured during an early-morning confrontation with a gunman in Mount Salem, St James, on Wednesday.
The incident unfolded along Crawford Street shortly after 3:00 a.m. as members of the Area One Area Fugitive Apprehension Team were carrying out patrol duties in the community.
According to preliminary police reports, the officers came under heavy gunfire, triggering an exchange in which three members of the team were wounded.
The man involved in the confrontation was identified as 29-year-old Romario “Jerry” Brown, who was reportedly wanted by the police in connection with serious crimes, including murder and shootings.
Brown sustained gunshot wounds during the confrontation and was taken to Cornwall Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
A firearm was reportedly recovered at the scene.
Three Officers Injured
The injured lawmen included two male officers and a female constable.
One of the male officers reportedly suffered gunshot wounds to his shoulders and both legs, while another sustained a graze to his right side.
The female constable was shot in the chest. However, the bullet reportedly struck her cellphone, which was positioned inside her police vest, helping to prevent a more serious injury.
The three officers were taken to Cornwall Regional Hospital for treatment. Reports indicate that one remained hospitalized, while the other two were treated and released.
INDECOM Investigating
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has been notified and is investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.
The Inspectorate of Constabulary has also been alerted as authorities work to establish the circumstances that led to the exchange of gunfire.
More Than 200 Fatal Police Shootings in 2026
The Mount Salem shooting comes as Jamaica continues to record a high number of fatal encounters involving members of the security forces.
As of September 8, INDECOM was investigating 207 people fatally shot by the police in Jamaica since the start of 2026. That figure was already lower than the 215 fatal police shootings recorded during the comparable period in 2025.
With Brown’s death occurring on September 9, the number would rise to at least 208 fatal police shootings for the year, subject to INDECOM’s official updating of its records.
INDECOM has continued to investigate fatal shootings across the island, including incidents involving planned police operations and reported armed confrontations.
The investigation into the Mount Salem incident is expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the exchange and the use of force that resulted in Brown’s death.
