Woman fatally shot by police in Granville

A woman known locally as Buju was fatally shot by police officers during a protest in the Granville community in St. James on Sunday afternoon, triggering an immediate heavy police deployment and calls for accountability from political representatives.

The demonstration had been organized to draw attention to the fatal police shooting of a 17-year-old boy in the same community exactly one week earlier.

According to witnesses and initial reports, the woman became involved in an altercation with officers who were present to monitor the gathering.

Video footage circulating from the scene appears to show the woman in a black Toyota Voxy attempting to drive away from the confrontation when she was shot at exactly 3:36pm.

Police have reportedly claimed that she tried to run down an officer with the vehicle.

Following the incident, a large contingent of police personnel moved into the area.
