Man Linked to Vendor’s Murder Killed by the Police in St. Catherine

A man who was wanted in connection with the murder of a vendor in St. Catherine was shot and killed by members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force during an alleged confrontation on Thursday.

The deceased man has been identified as Danville Powell, a resident of Harewood district, Riversdale, St. Catherine. The thirty-eight-year-old, who also went by the aliases ‘Alex’ and ‘Cool Face’, was a suspect in the murder of 55-year-old fruit vendor Wayne Mondle.

Mondle, otherwise known as ‘Coco’ and ‘Hanson’, was killed at his home in the Harewood district on September 28. Mondle was at home with relatives at the time of the incident, and explosions were heard coming from his bedroom.

His body was later found with what appeared to be gunshot wounds to his head. According to reports, a police team went on an intelligence-driven operation with a search warrant for Powell at approximately 6:40 a.m. yesterday.

Upon entering the premises where Powell was believed to be located, he allegedly attempted to disarm a member of the police team. A struggle ensued, and another officer opened fire on Powell, hitting him.

He was subsequently transported to the Linstead Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The incident was reported to the Independent Commission of Investigation (INDECOM), which has launched a probe into the shooting.

According to INDECOM, there have been 233 police-related fatal shootings since the beginning of the year.
