The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) has launched an investigation into the death of a Jamaican jockey, who was fatally shot by gunmen in his Kingston community over the weekend.
The deceased has been identified as Oneil Ricardo Mullings, a 49-year-old veteran jockey who was employed at Caymanas Park in St. Catherine. According to Supreme Ventures Racing and Entertainment Limited, Mullings began his riding career in 2002 and has recorded more than 415 wins.
Reports state that at the time of the incident on Sunday, Mullings was on Thompson View Avenue in Kingston 11, where he lived. Mullings was approached by a man who was armed with a gun, who then opened fire on him.
The jockey sustained a gunshot wound to the head. The police were notified and transported Mullings to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead by doctors at the medical facility.
Following Mullings’ fatal shooting, the police have identified two brothers as suspects in their investigation. Reports indicate that the men had a dispute with Mullings prior to the shooting.
The St. Andrew South police are leading the probe into the shooting. According to the JCF’s most recent Serious Crimes Report, St. Andrew South, St. Andrew Central, and St. Andrew North have recorded 24, 59, and 30 murders from January 1 to September 20, respectively.
