The police have launched an investigation into the shooting death of a businessman who was gunned down at a shop on Tuesday night in Banana Ground, Manchester.
The deceased business operator has been identified as Moncrief Balford. The 61-year-old resided in the Banana Ground District. According to reports, residents in the community heard loud explosions which sounded like gunfire at approximately 10:30 p.m. the night of the incident.
The police later arrived in the community, and Balford was discovered unresponsive outside the shop, lying on the ground. In addition to Balford, another man was also found at the premises with gunshot wounds.
Both of the men were transported to a hospital; however, Balford was pronounced dead, while the other injured man was admitted to the medical facility for treatment. His identity has not yet been disclosed.
Mario Mitchel, the councillor for the Bellefield Division, disclosed that the man is currently in critical condition.
“I would just want to condemn in the strongest fashion the murder and the shooting last night in the community of Banana Ground. Banana Ground is a community that is well-loved and well-liked across Jamaica for producing Olympians and persons who have made Jamaica proud. This is the second shooting in a few months. I remember one of the bar owners, or the operator of a bar, was killed while somebody was trying to break into his bar. The shooting last night was surprising to me… right now, one person has died, and another person is in critical condition in the Mandeville hospital,” Mitchel said.
