Father Charged with Murder After Allegedly Stabbing Toddlers to Death

A twenty-three-year-old father from St. Ann, who is currently the main suspect in the murder of his son and stepson, has been charged with murder following their deaths last month in Moneague.

One-year-old Amir Saunders and his older brother, 3-year-old Shamir Henry, were found dead in a bushy area behind the former’s home in the Swamp District of Moneague. Amir’s father, Alain Saunders, with whom he lived, was later taken into custody for his reported involvement in their deaths.

Head of the St. Ann police, Deputy Superintendent Rohan Elliot, disclosed that Saunders was questioned in the presence of his attorney on Monday. He was subsequently charged with two counts of murder.

While initial reports indicated that Saunders had confessed to the murders of the toddlers, Superintendent Elliot clarified that he had not admitted to committing the acts.

“I am aware that it is in the media that the suspect involved in the murders of the two children in Swamp District, Moneague, has confessed to the crime. But I want to make it clear that he did not confess,” Elliot said.

It is believed that Saunders attacked his son and stepson while under the influence of a drug-infused drink. According to reports, the children’s mother was visiting her youngest son at Saunders’ residence on August 26 and brought her older child to see his brother.

At some point that night, Saunders allegedly consumed ganja tea and began acting hysterically. After attacking and wounding the children’s mother, he allegedly turned on the children and attacked them with a pair of scissors.

Saunders’ court date has not yet been finalised.
