Taxi Man fatally shoots Fellow Taxi Operator in Kingston

A taxi operator is currently in police custody following the fatal shooting of another taxi man in Kingston on Monday morning.

The deceased man has been identified as Carlo Ellis. The 44-year-old, who operated on the Jones Town taxi route, was identified by relatives who were at the scene of the shooting.

According to reports, the incident occurred near the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH). Senior Superintendent Michael Phipps, the Commander of the police’s Area Four Division, disclosed that he received reports of the shooting at approximately 10:00 a.m.

Reports state that Ellis had an altercation with another taxi operator, who was a licensed firearm holder. The man, who is reportedly a former policeman, allegedly shot Ellis during the altercation and later turned himself in to the police.

Jamaica has recorded a spike in murders over the past week. According to the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s serious crime statistics, 23 murders were recorded from August 23 to August 30, with 11 homicides recorded over just two days.

The latest murder toll brings the country back to 2024’s average weekly murder count. However, murders in the country are down by approximately 42%.
