Man Killed After Allegedly Aiming a Gun at the Police in Linstead

A man was shot and killed by members of a police team on Thursday in Linstead, St. Catherine, after he allegedly aimed a firearm at the lawmen.

The deceased, Javian ‘Jay’ Johnson, was a resident of Wakefield, Backlands, in Linstead. Reports state that the police team were conducting a targeted operation in Backlands, and Johnson was accosted at a premises in the community.

After the police searched the dwelling, Johnson led them to a Nissan motor vehicle, which he entered and grabbed a handgun. He allegedly pointed the firearm at the officers, who took evasive action and opened fire on him.

The police reportedly seized a Browning pistol affixed with a magazine containing four 9mm cartridges. Johnson was later transported to the Linstead Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The shooting is currently being investigated by the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM). INDECOM is also probing another police-related shooting which also occurred in Linstead on Thursday.

Reports state that the incident occurred sometime after 5 a.m. in the community of Commodore, where the police were conducting a targeted operation. After entering a premises in the community, a man allegedly confronted the officers with a handgun.

The police took evasive action and shot the man, who was later admitted to the Linstead Hospital.
