LGBT advocacy group the Equality For All Foundation (EFAF) has confirmed the death of popular Jamaican transgender TikToker Trish Hamilton, more popularly known as Trish Doll.
Last week, reports surfaced that Trish had taken her life during a TikTok live stream. However, her death was not confirmed, with some social media users speculating if the reports had been fabricated.
Following the rumours of Trish’s death, it was reported that a 23-year-old man by the name of Kevon Hamilton had died from a suspected suicide. Reports stated that the man was found hanging from a ceiling with a curtain around his neck.
The EFAF had since clarified in a statement that while the reports had used the TikToker’s birth name, her preferred name was Trish, and she was also affectionately known as ‘Bubbles’. Sharing that it was saddened by Trish’s passing, the EFAF said that she radiated positive energy during her life.
The EFAF went on to state that many members of the LGBT community in the country face violence and discrimination.
“By now, it should be no secret that being a part of the LGBTQ+ community in Jamaica is not an easy experience. Many of us face violence, discrimination, and displacement from family members. This is especially true for trans and gender non-conforming people, particularly trans women, like Trish,” the EFAF said in their statement.
The EFAF added that a 2021 study sampling 220 LGBTQ+ people revealed that more than a quarter, 27%, have attempted suicide. A woman, who was reportedly watching Trish’s final live stream, detailed the TikToker’s alleged final moments to her friend and fellow TikToker Candy.
According to the woman, Trish, who had been seeking financial assistance online, shared that no one was helping her. She then left to get the curtain and placed it around her neck.
The woman further disclosed that Trish’s body was first discovered by her boyfriend.
