A man was shot by members of a police team after an alleged confrontation in Old Harbour, St. Catherine, on Thursday night.
The man’s name has not yet been shared with the public. According to reports, the incident occurred at approximately 11:50 p.m.
At the time of the alleged altercation with the man, the police team was conducting an operation in the Grove district of Gutters. Reports do not specify if the man confronted the officers with a weapon, but he was shot and later taken to the Spanish Town Hospital for treatment.
He was admitted to the medical facility, but his current status is not known. The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) has notified the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) about the shooting, and the organisation has launched an investigation into the incident.
INDECOM has expressed concern on numerous occasions over the rising number of police shootings and the JCF’s failure to use body-worn cameras during planned operations. According to INDECOM, 190 people have been fatally shot by members of the JCF from January 1 to July 31.
Twenty-eight of those deaths were recorded in July alone. The percentage of people killed by the police has surpassed 100% when compared to the same period last year.
