A man was shot and killed after he allegedly confronted the police with a weapon in Spanish Town, St. Catherine.
The identity of the deceased man has not yet been shared with the public. The incident occurred when members from the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) from the St Catherine North Specialised Operational Team were on patrol in Spanish Town on Thursday.
At approximately 3:50 p.m., the police personnel on patrol were acting on information that led them to a premises at Prince Avenue. It is not clear if the unidentified man was the target of the police operation.
According to reports, after the police team arrived at a board house on Prince Avenue, the man was reportedly observed with a firearm. The man then allegedly pointed his firearm at the officers and fired several shots at them.
Reports state that the officers took evasive action to defend themselves and opened fire on the man. The man was shot and injured after the officers returned fire.
The man was allegedly carrying a Glock pistol affixed with a magazine loaded with two rounds of nine-millimetre cartridges, which was seized.
He was transported to the Spanish Town Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead by the medical staff.
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has launched an investigation into the fatal shooting.
