Alleged Gunman Killed by Police in St. Catherine

The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has launched an investigation into the fatal shooting of an alleged gunman by members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) in St. Catherine.

The deceased man’s identity has not yet been disclosed to the public. According to reports, the man was shot during a police operation at about 4:24 a.m in Mickleton Meadows, Linstead, on Tuesday.

It is not clear if the deceased was the target of the operation. However, the police say the man, who was armed with a handgun, allegedly challenged them.

The officers reportedly took evasive action and shot him. A Beretta pistol affixed with a magazine containing one round of ammunition was allegedly seized from the scene of the shooting.

The man was later transported to the Linstead Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Over 154 people have been fatally shot during confrontations with the police since the beginning of the year.

Human rights organisation Jamaicans For Justice (JFS) has repeatedly called for the use of body-worn cameras by the JCF. Amid public scrutiny, the JCF has rejected what it described as baseless claims that it is resisting the use of body-worn cameras.
