A member of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) was shot and killed during a robbery at a supermarket in St. James on Monday evening.
The deceased has been identified as Constable Garry Hamilton. According to preliminary reports from Nationwide News, Constable Hamilton was not on duty and was employed as a security guard at Andy’s Supermarket on Barnett Street in Montego Bay.
Reports state that at approximately 5:52 p.m., Andy’s Supermarket was invaded by multiple armed men. After entering, the men went on to steal $3 million in cash from the supermarket.
While the assailants were about to flee the scene with the stolen cash, Constable Hamilton challenged them. It was during the confrontation with the armed men that the constable was shot and killed.
The gunmen later fled the scene. The suspected identities of the gunmen have not yet been shared with the public. However, preliminary reports state that one of the men suspected to be behind the robbery which resulted in the constable’s murder yesterday was recently released from prison.
According to Nationwide News, Hamilton had been on suspension from the JCF since June 11, 2018, at the time of his murder. The reason for Hamilton’s suspension was not disclosed.
