Man Who Escaped from Jail Killed by the Police in Kingston

A man who has been wanted by the police since he escaped from jail over a year ago was shot and killed during an alleged confrontation with the authorities in Kingston.

The deceased, Gavin Hurd, was a resident of Fort Stewart, Enfield, in St. Mary. Hurd escaped the Highgate Police Lockup in St. Mary in 2023.

Intelligence gathered by the police in 2024 indicated that he was hiding in the Waterhouse community. According to reports, a member of the Yacca Avenue gang on Rosalie Avenue was harbouring the fugitive, who was allegedly helping him steal cars.

Reports state that members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) went to 71 Rosalie Avenue in Kingston 11 on Tuesday. Information indicated that multiple wanted men with illegal firearms were located at the premises at Rosealie Avenue.

Hurd was discovered at the location at approximately 1:30 pm. According to the authorities, when they found Hurd, he pulled out a firearm and pointed it at the officers.

The officers allegedly took evasive action, shooting the 33-year-old in the upper body. A 9-millimetre pistol with seven live rounds of ammunition was later seized.

Hurd, who was also known as ‘Bones’, was pronounced dead after being taken to the Kingston Public Hospital.
