The circumstances surrounding the death of a 4-year-old girl are currently under investigation, as the child was seemingly accidentally shot with her mother’s licensed firearm.
The deceased has been identified as Gia Grinnel. She resided in the upscale community of Ingleside in Mandeville with her mother and a sibling.
Grinnel was at home with her mother and her 12-year-old sibling at the time the incident occurred on Tuesday at approximately 10:00 p.m. Reports state that the mother, whose name was not disclosed, put both children to bed before the incident happened.
The mother told the authorities that it occurred while she was using the restroom. She reportedly went to check on the children after hearing a loud explosion.
Grinnel was found with a gunshot wound to the head and was rushed to a hospital. However, the child was later pronounced dead by doctors at the medical facility.
According to reports, the mother’s licensed firearm was left in her handbag, but reports do not explicitly state if the child was shot with the weapon. However, the gun was seized by the Jamaican Constabulary Force (JCF) as their investigation into Grinnel’s death continues.
