Amid growing concerns surrounding violence against women and children in Jamaica, Dancehall artiste Popcaan called for action to be taken in a video message on Monday.
Popcaan’s message follows the rape and murder of 9-year-old Kelsey Ferrigon and the physical assault of a nurse last week. Popcaan highlighted both incidents in his post on Instagram.
During the video, Popcaan said that he was sending the message to bring awareness to multiple incidents that have recently happened in the country that he does not approve of. The Family deejay expressed that he does not like the direction that the nation is going in.
Highlighting Ferrigon’s assault, Popcaan said that more dialogue about these issues is needed in local communities.
“… Di raping and dem ting deh mi nuh like. Dem rape di 9-year-old girl and kill are… Mi feel like wi fi pay more attention to these things, yuh know. like wi fi have more dialogue wid each other in the community dem, so wi can protect the kids dem more,” Popcaan stated.
He went on to speak about the viral video of a licensed firearm holder physically assaulting a nurse. The artiste highlighted that despite owning multiple properties in Jamaica, he has not been able to acquire a firearm legally, yet this man was.
“Mi si a man all a walk in a nurse head and dem sumting deh. Me guh apply fo licence gun dem nah gi mi eh licence gun, and mi own so much property in a Jamaica, but dem so-called upstanding citizen deh weh dem have, a tep in a nurse head, a walk in a nurse head, and a abuse a nurse,” Popcaan stated.
He added that, as a nation, Jamaicans need to take these issues more seriously and eradicate sexual offenders.
