A fifty-nine-year-old man was beaten by an angry mob after he allegedly sexually assaulted a 6-year-old girl.
The man’s identity was not disclosed, but Superintendent Coleridge Minto, the head of the St. Elizabeth police, confirmed that they have launched an investigation into the incident. The accused is currently in police custody.
According to reports, the incident happened on Saturday, May 10, in the Leeds District near Santa Cruz, St. Elizabeth. The young child was at home on her verandah when the alleged perpetrator grabbed and fondled her.
As reports of the incident spread, members of the community formed a mob and confronted the man. The accused was beaten by the mob and had to be transported to a hospital for treatment.
The incident came on the heels of the murder of St John’s Primary student Kelsey Ferrigon in Spanish Town, St. Catherine, on Friday. The 9-year-old was reportedly raped before she was killed and stuffed in a barrel.
Her suspected killer, Giovanni Ellis, was shot and killed on Monday in Sandy Bay, Clarendon, during an alleged confrontation with the police. Ellis allegedly pointed a gun at the officers after they located him.
