Koffee Releases First Solo Single in Three Years

In 2020, Reggae star Koffee became the first woman and the youngest person to win the Best Reggae Album at the Grammys for her EP Rapture. However, the young artiste later took an unexpected hiatus from music that saw her release no new solo singles for over three years.

Her last solo music project, her 10-track studio album Gifted, was released in 2022 and nominated for a Best Reggae Album Grammy for the 65th Grammy Awards. After the release of her debut album, Koffee was later featured on Gimmie with English singer Sam Smith and Jessie Reyez in 2023.

The song’s music video quickly sparked controversy, with many conservative Reggae fans taking issue with Koffee’s appearance in a video which seemingly promoted LGBTQ relationships. What followed was an unexpected hiatus from both music and social media that left fans wondering when Koffee would release her next project.

The singer has now returned with a self-titled track, Koffee, declaring her resurgence with a bold new style. Koffee blends familiar Reggae elements with Hip-Hop. Produced by Marquis Abrahams and Carlene Samuels, Koffee doesn’t only blend Hip-Hop with its Reggae instrumentals, but the artiste herself explores a new lyrical delivery, rapping her verses.

Koffee’s opening verse shows love to fellow Jamaican artiste Masicka, with the reggae singer declaring the All Whites deejay the only artiste “sicka” than she is. Befitting her bold new approach, Koffee uses the song to repeatedly proclaim her confidence and dominance.

“I be in my bs all the way. When I pull up you know the time of day. And dis a Kofee with the K. Some call mi Mikayla. I’m still Koffee when you wake up. Get in to the paper. We don’t need no makeup. Ain’t nobody greater. I’m the baddest thing out a Jamaica,” Koffee sings in the song’s Chorus.

Despite her new flow, Koffee maintains in the single that she is the same Koffee that fans fell in love with years ago.
