An unidentified man who reportedly pulled a body from a casket at a funeral in St. Catherine was shot by one of the mourners.
Superintendent Hopton Nicholson says the police will be probing the incident.
Reports are that, at around 5:20pm a funeral was in progress when an unidentified man interrupted the proceedings.
The man is said to be of unsound mind.
The man reportedly threw stones at mourners before removing the body from the casket and placing it on the ground.
The police were summoned, and on their arrival, they fired warning shots, which did not deter the mentally ill.
A member of the funeral procession then used his licensed firearm and fired in the direction of the unidentified man, hitting him multiple times.
The man was assisted to the Spanish Town Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The licensed firearm was seized by the police.
